Ground Truth Trekking

On Mamelak Mountain we encountered three muskox. First we saw a group in the distance, trundling across a tussock plain. Then when we reached the summit of Mamelak, and three muskox lay resting just 50 yards in front of us. We circled to photograph and they stood up, but did not retreat until we were headed out. Apparently part of their survival strategy is to minimize energy consumption by not fleeing. I wonder how they defend themselves from bears?
