Potential access corridor Chuitna Coal Mine, the coal would run along a 12 mile long conveyor belt to a storage facility at Ladd Landing on the shore of Cook Inlet.

"A covered overland coal transport conveyor with an annual throughput capacity of 15 million MT per year would be constructed. The conventional continuous belt conveyor would transport coal from the mine service area to the Ladd Coal Export Terminal. The entire conveyor structure would be approximately 2.9 m (9.6 ft) tall and 2.2 m (7.3 ft) wide. The coal-carrying belt would be a minimum of 1.0 m (3.3 ft) above the ground and would be supported by heavy duty pipe yokes attached to the horizontal steel pipe at 2 m (6.5 ft) intervals.

The conveyor belt would be covered on top and one side with a weatherhood to protect the coal from moisture and wind. The open side would permit visual inspection of and access to the rollers for maintenance. Whenever the conveyor crosses streams, it would be partially enclosed on the underside to prevent coal or dust from entering the stream."

Mine proposal pips Chuitna Coal prospect - proposed pit Chuitna Coal Mine proposal.

The proposal calls for a surface (open pit) mine, which would involve dewatering the area, plowing up the vegetation, and removing the topsoil and rock layers that cover the coal.

PacRim estimates coal reserves at Chuitna to be about 300 million metric tons, and expects production of up to 12 million metric tons (MT)/year, over a 25 year mine life. This would make Chuitna the fourteenth largest coal mine in the country, and the largest coal mine in Alaska history.

The proposal is opposed by many local residents and environmental groups - who are concerned about the project's local impact on fish, wildlife, and human health, and about the global impact of increased coal use.

Port proposal pips Ladd dock proposal Chuitna Coal Mine is built, there is one potential local use for the coal at a proposed Beluga Coal-to-Liquids plant. However, Alaska currently obtains only a small fraction (less than 10%) of its energy from coal, using less than a million metric tons of coal per year (compared to the potential 12 million from Chuitna). All of this coal is supplied by the Usibelli coal mine, which also exports nearly half of the coal it produces, mainly to Asian markets.

Therefore, if Chuitna is built, the coal is likely to be exported.

"A trestle facility 3,048 m (10,000 ft) long would be constructed into Cook Inlet that would be capable of an annual throughput of 15 million MT per year with upland storage of approximately 250,000 MT; an offshore vessel berth with an 18-20 m (±60 ft) minimum draft and 13 installed capacity to load ocean going vessels at approximately 75,000 to 80,000 MT per day."
Chuitna Scoping Document

Mine opponents worry that the structures and traffic at the landing facility could impact the endangered beluga whales, migrating salmon, or other marine life in the inlet.

Ladd Landing area Chuitna Mine is built, the coal stockyard at Ladd Landing would have the capacity to store 100,000 to 500,000 metric tons of coal in an open stockyard that would be contained within a graded foundation and surface water collection ditches.

In the 1990 EIS for Chuitna, it was estimated that over 200 tons of dust would blow from this storage facility each year. This dust could cause health problems for local human residents, as well as wildlife.
