Winter at the Chuitna prospect

The low winter sun filters through the trees on a snowy hill - at the proposed site of the Chuitna Coal Mine, near Beluga, Alaska This eight square mile area near the Chuitna River is the site of a controversial proposal to build a large coal strip mine. We skied through the frozen hills and wetlands at the Chuitna prospect in the winter of 2008, on our long and winding way to the Aleutian Islands.
