Overnight these crystals grew in the supercooled water from a nearby spring.
— Radiating crystals like this are not diagnostic of supercooled water. We saw similar forms in merely near-freezing water after cold nights. However, when they appear dramatically after a night that leaves only light frost and thin skim-ice, they probably form in super-cooled water. Read more about our Life on Ice expedition.
