Muskox

On and near Mamelak Mountain we encountered small groups of muskox.
— The first group was in the distance, trundling across a tussock plain. Then when we reached the summit of Mamelak, three muskox lay resting just 50 yards in front of us. We circled to photograph and they stood up, but did not retreat until we were headed out. Apparently part of their survival strategy is to minimize energy consumption by not fleeing. I wonder how they defend themselves from bears?
