Camped on the desert coast

Peru's coast is incredibly dry - pretty much as dry as deserts get. Along this section between the towns of Tanaka and Chala, rugged rocky terrain extends down into the surf. Above the water the soil, permeated by salt from spray, barely supports any life, but the wave-washed intertidal is rich with life, including extensive kelp forests.
