Bear-gnawed tree

A bear recently peeled this cottonwood and scraped cambium from beneath the bark.
— This was photographed in summer of 2017, and such tree damage was unusually widespread this summer. It may be that the bears were hungry - 2016 was a great year for them, so the population may have been higher, and the berries were few and late in 2017.
