I LOVED the story of your adventure. The bare truth of it was great (finding food at abandoned camps, eating icing and sticks of butter for calories, the bear who made quick work of your camp at the END on your journey). These details stay with me and I read your book months ago. I am dying to try packrafting now.

So what I want to know is when are you heading toward the east coast for your book tour? I think these would be lots of interested folks who would love to hear your story. Hope it happens soon AND there are lots of REI's (one of your frequent speaking venues) in the east. Hope you come to MA soon!

I just read your article in the New York Times and loved it! I hope the three of you continue on your journey. You are LIVING your dream and that takes such courage. The rest of us will live vicariously through you! I teach Biology at Herndon High School in Herndon, Va.(Fairfax County Schools) and will keep my classes updated on your quest to help the environment. Take Care......

Loved reading about your life in this morning's Sunday New York Times (newsprint version - not sure when the online version appeared). Somehow I wasn't surprised to see you went to Carleton. (I attended Carleton for 10 weeks in 1971 but transferred somewhere else.) You're an inspiring example!

Hi. I just read the yurt story in NY Times. I admire your sense of adventure and conviction. After seeing Grizzly Man on Norwegian national TV station NRK2 last night, I have to ask if bears are a challenge where you are during summer?

Greeting from the north Georgia mountains! Though tonight it feels cold enough to be AK! I saw the NYT article and straight away read your blog. Your lifestyle is beautiful - I very much enjoyed the read and the pictures. Good on you then and God Bless.

    Self Punishing?
January 2, 2010, 7:13 pm
Why do some think that people who live unconventionally are self punishing? Why do some see incongruity between living simply and giving others glimpses into how they live?
Looking at the beautifully decorated yurt and outhouse, it's tough to see you as self punishing!
You have found a way to live in relative freedom and should be commended. Anyone who can't recognize that is the one that needs help!

Though I did not do it in the arctic north, I did live in a variety of unusual places when I was young; in the heights of the Smokey Mountains where I met the last of a mountain people to the swamps of southern Florida where I helped build my own house. Living without electricity or indoor plumbing merely takes a little more planning is all. The things I learned during that time of my life could never be given in a classroom and they have served me well during my entire existence.
The only thing I might do a little differently if I could, is trust myself more than I did at the time.
The best of luck to you! You are amassing a wealth of knowledge that you can never imagine where it will take you or how it will serve you~

Nice NYTimes article. Hopefully it will bring increased attention to your cause. I envy the time that you are able to devote to experiencing life, far from the "rat race" . I'd love to see some more photos of the world that you live in !
I do think that I might spring for the propane heater though :)

Thanks everyone for the comments!
To clear up a few things - the NY times does not pay anyone to be in their paper. We make our money in a variety of ways (the book being one, contract and freelance work being another, etc...) Like most folks, we are not "self-sustained" (and we're certainly not "self-punishing!"). I value being part of both my local and world communities.

    Robert
January 1, 2010, 3:33 pm
I can so see why you live out there but you still need the "Big world", like the NYT to make money. Why don't you stay completely self sustained just use your blog and book sales as an income. You are falling back onto the world you come from.

    Concerned Friend
January 1, 2010, 12:55 pm
My question: when did the abuse happen to you in your childhood? Why are you evangelizing your extremely self-punishing way of life, but simultaneously contradicting your values with high-profile publishing in the New York Times. Does that not seem incongruous to you? What happened to you in your past? Please, for your child's sake - get some help.

Your saga reminds me of a man named Mr. Swanson from Unalaska who made this journey twice as a teen in the 1920's (ala Rabbit Proof Fence, escaping from the Chemawa Boarding school in Salem Oregon). It also took him a year or so (the first time, but only 3 months the second). But that's another story. Enjoyed your talk in PDX at Powells.

Hi Erin and Hig,

I love your photos and paintings. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I'm looking forward to see you two tomorrow night in Seattle.

October 21, 2009, 8:48 am
Hi Trekkers,
Thank you for letting us share your experience by being able to purchase your book! Besides encountering “lost” hikers in North Vancouver Watersheds, I also contribute articles on a monthly basis in a weekly paper in Sweden. So now, I have to admit that I have used our encounter in North Vancouver, as an example to my readers that nothing is impossible if you plan carefully and you have a shared dream to focus on. Your book should be on the shelves in every library as an inspiration for "young readers of all ages" to turn their Gameboys and I-phones off every now and then for a reality check. Thank you for your inspiring journey, it will be a true pleasure to read your book! All the very best to the 3 of you, Conny and Vicki Fjellner

Spotted your Redoubt vid on the Weather Channel and immediately went to your site. Outstanding. I especially enjoyed your treatment of the "clean" coal plant and corn for fuel. Right on the target for those topics. You treat such stuff the same way I do in my blog. Is your hike powerpoint on a CD yet? It would be great. I will be back for more detailed reading as the days go by. Thankyou for your opinions on Ground Truth Trekking. Very enjoyable.

Hi Erin and Hig,
I met you both on the Alaskan Ferry soon after you completed your trek at False Pass on June 29, 2008. I thoroughly enjoyed your power point presentations -- a truly superior performance by the both of you together!! (This comes from a National Park Service grayhaired retiree!) Suggest you put that presentation on DVD -- I would buy it immediately.

Suspect you have heard about Sonia Poussin and Alexandre Poussin who took about 1,200 days to hike from the southern tip of Africa to the Sea of Galilea. If not see Africatrek.com.

Might see you again since my daughter and her family live in Homer and my wife and I travel that way now and then.

Best wishes on your book. Know that is a HUGE project from personal experience.

Erin and Hig,
You two have traveled many miles since our paths crossed on Pt. Alava! I was one of Colin's kayaking companions headed south from Juneau. I think often of our enounter, and your attitudes towards your adventure. What incredible people you are to be living so free and happy traveling in the wilderness. After we talked on the rocky shore of the Behm Canal that day I paddeled away speechless, with a lasting sense of awe and inspiration. Your writing and photography furthur blow my mind! You share a first-hand account of the natural beauty and intrigue inherent in every place. I wish you safe travels and may you reach 'the first island bears can't swim too' :)

Hi Erin & Hig,
Riana is doing a report on you both for her "Movers and Shakers" project at school (5th grade). She has been researching the effects of global warming on the Artic. She has found out all about the effects on some of the animals and the glacial "feedback" loops making things melt even faster than the temperature increases would warrent. We are in awe of you both for pursuing such a noble cause with such bravery and dedication. Proud to know you!!! Kayana, Riana, and Richard

For some real science, please check out www.thegreatglobalwarmingswindle.com.
If you watch the video they have produced, it might open your eyes as to how little influence us humans have on the earth's climate.
Bottom line: The earth's climate is controlled by the sun's energy output and the resulting wator vapor it creates from our oceans.
I hope you can open your mind a little on this point. Of course, if you renounce your belief on this, it may lead to fewer donations to your sponsored camping trip. Global warming is big business now.
Honestly though, I still wish you good luck with your journey.

I thought you were on a grand adventure that exemplified the human spirit. Alas, I was wrong when I read you incorporated enviro-wacko thought to this. Your belief in the voodoo science of man made global warming tells me you have a lot to learn. But then you did go to Carelton! the Earth is NOT fragile. Its complex, resilient and supplies the natural resources we need.

Bret,
Deb and I have been amazed at your journeys and adventurous spirit. You may recall the time we went up into the bowls across from Seldovia on a rainy and snowy (above 500 feet) November day in 1994. Although I spent only one year teaching in Seldovia, my memories of you and the town are still vivid. It was great sharing not only part of your senior year, but your senior trip to Mexico. Keep on Trekkin' and we hope to see you next time we make it up north. Good luck!

Erin and Hig,
Thanks for the great pictures and info on the Pebble Mine. I fished the Nush for the first time this year after having fished other river systems for the past 8 years in Alaska. After hearing about the Pebble Mine and it's plans while being up there I just wanted to take the time to say thanks for the awareness you have bought to this with this website. Please keep me in mind for any help I can lend to your cause. As people enter my office back in NY the first thing they see is a "No Pebble Mine" flag I brought back with me. This project would with no doubt bring the end to a wonderful water shed and fishing area unequaled anywhere outside of Alaska.

Erin and Hig,
Hey guys just wanted to touch base with you once I got back to Petersburg from crabbing. I am the guy you saw on the little crabber just before you went into Fools Inlet, in Seymour Canal.
I read your blog once I got home (24 days out but I have a stove, a bunk and a freezer so who cares! all though having someone to talk to besides myself would be nice). I just want to say that I have the utmost in respect for what you are doing. I have always thought of the oldtimers that traveled this country looking for gold or furs or whatever with awe and I don't think anyone has come close to doing what they did without outboards planes etc... until you came along. It sounds like you got some grief for the crabbers along the way, I in no way wanted to add to that. I am sure we would differ in opions about some things but I have a feeling that we would agree alot more than not. I just wanted to wish you luck and good travels on your journey. Take care and stay dry and warm.

Hi Hig and Erin! I've been reading your wonderful blog. Congratulations on completing the nautical portion of your adventure, for this season at least. I'm one of the kayakers you met near Bella Bella way back on August 5/6. I finished my kayak trip (for this season at least) in Bella Coola on August 16.
All the best to you! Best regards, Michael

I passed you two on Mitkoff Hwy near Petersburg. I am the state trooper who was off duty and offered a ride. I have come across all kinds of adventures since moving to AK. Looking at this I see you are well planned and equipped. Best of luck and safe travels.

Hello and Great Adventuring!
I came acrossyour trek on Google Earth and thought I'd just put in a couple lines. I have lived in Alaska for the past 14 years and have been all over the Kenai, Kodiak, Barrow, and now live here with the friendliest folks in Alaska in Metlakatla. My ranging around has slowed a little since the birth of our lovely daughter - but we all hike and canoe this island as often as we can and we will be following your adventures as often as we can - you guys are the envy of most of humanity!
Have a Great Adventure!

Hi,
I am Josh Johnson's wife (Bret knows him from Seldovia). You guys are doing a great thing here. I have sent word to the Daily News Miner in Fairbanks and also to The Ester Republic (a local independent paper) so you may be contacted by them for interviews. Be careful and we might run into one of these days when you get settled in AK.

Hello,
I found your website through Flickr as I'm always looking for photos of Northwest Canada and Alaska. Great project I wish I could do it too. I'm really impressed and will continue to follow your journey.

We are so proud of you both. I remember when Bret was just this little guy who amazed us all here in Seldovia with his unique, beautiful earrings he made on the beach using magnification. Both you and Erin make all of Seldovia very proud.

Just wanted to let you know that you two are and inspiration! In a world where X Box live is a modern adventure, it's good to see that a few people are still willing to step into the unknown. I stumbled across your site while planning my own alaska trek and look forward to tracking your progress and learning from you. You will be in my thoughts.

I admire your past trips and wish you great luck on your latest adventure. I came upon your site last year when researching rafts for an Aniakchak trip. I was fortunate to guide/live on the Katmai Coastline for bear viewing and have visited Katmai the past 11 years.
I look forward to reading about your findings and trip.

Well, with just a little more than 2.5 days before you take off I'm sure you are scrambling to make sure you've got all of your pre-trip checklist items taken care of. I'll be keeping an eye on your website/blog to see how you are doing. It's fun to see and hear the reaction from my friends and co-workers when I show them what you two are doing.

Oh to be young again.

I found your website when I started looking for pictures of Wrangle-St. Elias. I was rafting down the Chitna River to McCarthy while you two were living large on the AK pennensula trip.

I'll butcher this quote, but I hope that you feel excited, the excitement that only a free person can feel, a free person starting on a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain.

Good luck.

Hi from Kodiak!
You guys are crazy! Nice crazy, we need more people in the world like you. I have lived in Alaska all my life, traveled in most of it and applaud your environmental efforts. Your next trek, out to the Aleutians looks like it bypasses Kodiak, but if you get a chance, please visit. I would love to show you my lampworking studio.
