"The past two years' explorations in the supposed coal fields of Western Alaska have demonstrated that the Territory presents a new and inexhaustable source of wealth in its coal fields. There is every indication that the coal can be easily mined. This is the unvarying statement of every person who has had the means of personal observation. ... The supply seems illimitable, the consumption will rapidly increase, and the business of its transportation to California, Oregon, and Washington will become enormous."
New York Times, 1889

Evan Jones (Jonesville) Coal Mine The Evans Jones Coal Mine operated between 1920 and 1968 in Sutton, AK where it produced over five million tons of coal.

In 1937 a coal mine explosion here killed 14 men and stopped production for some time. The mine closed in 1959.

Much of the mine (now known as the Jonesville Mine) is currently under various stages of active reclamation under the Abandoned Mine Reclamation Act. Throughout the 1990's and 2000's there has been sporadic interest in re-opening the mine.
