Bluff Point coal seam
A coal seam makes a dark stripe across the bluffs at Bluff Point in Homer, Alaska.

Small-scale coal mining formed a significant part of the Homer economy in the early 1900s, but no large mine has ever been built in the Cook Inlet region. Even now, locals gather coal on the beach for home heating.
